An early document from 1181 pointed out the distinction between Grondona Nuova and Grondona Vecchia, so one could assume the birth of Grondona before the year 1000.
Indeed, it appears from documentation that on March 18, 1081, Guido II the cleric, son of Adalbert III Marquis of Gavi, sold his portion equal to half of the castle of Grondona to the subdeacon Girvino.
In 1310 the Fieschi became lords of Grondona and would be for some time, and after the notorious Fieschi conspiracy in 1547, Emperor Ferdinand I granted the fief of Grondona to Prince Andrea Doria.

What to see in Grondona
It most likely dates back to the 13th century. It was built for the religious services of New Grondona. It was later enlarged in the 17th century.
WORKS
- Painting of Madonna and Child between Saints Peter and Paul (14th century)
- Portal of the Romanesque Church (12th century)
- Romanesque Bell Tower (12th Century)
- Painting of Saints Dominic, Bernard and Louis, King of France
- Painting Madonna and Child adored by a Carthusian monk
- Painting of the Deposed Jesus
The pictorial and figurative culture appears to be fairly homogeneous, with simple and immediate stylistic choices, with faces with strongly contrasted rendering and a calligraphic treatment of faces with a square and robust design and eyes marked with obvious markings.
All the decoration could be attributed to Franceschino Boxilio.
The belfry is opened by mullioned windows: inside are frescoes dedicated to St. Anthony the Abbot, St. James of Compostela, St. Peter and Paul, St. George, the Virgin in the act of beating the Devil, between St. Andrew and St. Anthony the Abbot by Antonio Barbe from 1649.
The castle was a manor with two towers located on an imposing hill, until 1934, when a tremendous landslide caused it to collapse.
Currently, the landslide that cut the hill, a tower and a small castle artifact attached to what is left remain.
Grondona is known for its very well-preserved historic center both in terms of stone buildings and stone paving for certain sections.
Within the historic center, very well preserved is the town hall building.
Within the historic center there is a beautiful Romanesque bridge that is well preserved and used by even today.
There are some buildings still intact today that are located along the territory of Grondona on the mountainous part
They are the abegi.
Abegi are very low, two-story stone and mud buildings located in the middle of the forest where chestnuts were dried.
On the upper part, with a wooden loft, through which heat could pass, the chestnuts were placed; on the ground-floor part, the peasants lit the very slow fire that was used slowly to cook the chestnuts.
Feeding the fire was very important, so the farmers would spend all night outside the abegio to keep feeding the fire.
If the fire had not been steadily fed, the burned chestnuts would have been neither edible nor marketable.
Chestnuts were then the only meal that fed local farmers.
There are countless of them still well preserved and worthy of a tour among the abegi.
